Description
Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist, oil on canvas attributed to Elisabetta Sirani (Bologna 1638–1665).
Details

Elegant, intense 17th-century interpretation of the subject, attributable to Elisabetta Sirani or her closest circle, active at Bologna during the mid-17th century. The female figure is treated with the composed grace, soft modelling, and satin-like luminosity that characterise Sirani’s painting, heir to and original interpreter of Reni’s tradition.

Oil on canvas, notable for the quality of the drawing, the refinement of the chiaroscuro transitions, and the measured yet engaged expressive handling. A significant example of female Bolognese production of the mature Baroque, combining formal elegance with strong narrative sensitivity.
