The upper drawer opens to reveal six small drawers and a central compartment with a mirror. The commode is veneered with richly inlaid violetwood, featuring neoclassical motifs in walnut, maple, palisander, and green-stained maple. Feet, handles, and keyhole escutcheons are in finely chased and gilded bronze. The top is veneered with “Verde Antico” marble.
An exceptional piece, considered among the finest examples of Italian Neoclassicism. The distinctly French inspiration of the bronze mounts can be traced to the documented connections between the Brignole Sale family and Paris. The outstanding craftsmanship links this piece to a group of furnishings attributed to the renowned Genoese architect Gaetano Cantoni, now housed in the museums of Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Reale.
