Four Giltwood Armchairs, Genoa

Description
A series of four finely carved and gilded wood armchairs, Genoa, second half of the 18th century
Details

An elegant set of four transitional Louis XV–Louis XVI armchairs, made in Genoa in the second half of the 18th century, finely carved and gilt, with refined decoration of intertwined ribbons and corner rosettes. The forms harmonize the gently curving, slightly bombé lines of the Rococo with the restrained Neoclassical elegance typical of the transitional period.

The turned and fluted legs, with floral-carved joints, reflect the fully established influence of the Louis XVI taste, while the sinuous armrests and carved volutes still preserve the flowing elegance of Louis XV. The original or carefully restored leaf gilding enriches the structure with a precious luminosity, enhancing the decorative details.

Upholstered in red damask fabric with gilt diamond-shaped geometric motifs, the armchairs combine formal refinement and comfort, making them suitable both for museum contexts and prestigious interiors. Similar examples are found in Ligurian aristocratic collections of the time, bearing witness to the excellence of late-18th-century Genoese cabinetmaking.
