Work of great charm attributed to Antonio Travi, also known as the “Sordo di Sestri”, among the most interesting landscape painters active at Genoa during the 17th century.
The scene shows a seascape with ancient ruins, a boat, and fishermen, set within a luminous, suspended atmosphere. The painting displays features typical of the artist’s mature manner: dense yet vibrant paint surface, rapid, nervous brushwork, and particular sensitivity to light, built through blue, grey, and white tonalities.
The work relates closely to other known seascapes by Travi, particularly the compositional balance, the monumental treatment of the ruins, and the small figures set within a broad, theatrical landscape. While retaining the aspect of an everyday fishermen’s scene, the subject may also carry an allusive meaning.
