Description
Immaculate Madonna, carved, gilt, and polychrome wooden sculpture, School of Anton Maria Maragliano, Genoa, first half of the 18th century
Details

The Virgin is depicted in an ascending pose, hands crossed over her chest and eyes lifted toward the heavens, wrapped in a richly gilded cloak adorned with delicate decorative motifs. At the base rest three finely carved cherubs, a hallmark of Maragliano’s workshop.

Though bearing the marks of time, the original polychromy retains its vibrancy, while the gilding enhances the movement of the drapery, imparting an extraordinary lightness to the figure.
