Description
Pair of porcelain vases decorated in Pompeian style on an orange ground, Paris, late 18th early 19th century
Details

This pair of baluster-shaped Paris porcelain vases, with a salmon background and sphinx-shaped handles, features finely painted decoration in the neoclassical taste. In the reserve, a scene from Antiquity unfolds with classically dressed figures set within an interior opening onto a landscape. Gilt friezes highlight the foot and neck. The handles are represented by two winged female figures in biscuit porcelain. The square base is painted to imitate red royal marble. The elegance of form, quality of material, and finesse of painting exemplify the excellence of Parisian manufacture in the early 19th century.
